The Four Guides | 四御

Directly below the Three Pures in the celestial hierarchy are the Four Guides (Siyu 四御), a council of four exalted sovereigns who assist in the administration of the universe . If the Three Pures are the transcendent essence of the Tao, the Four Guides are its active, governing power, overseeing the myriad phenomena of heaven, earth, and humanity. They are the divine ministers who ensure the cosmos runs in perfect order.

The most prominent among them is the Great Jade Emperor (Yuhuang Dadi 玉皇大帝), the ruler of all heavens and the sovereign of the celestial bureaucracy . He is the deity most commonly addressed by the common people in matters of fate and justice.

The second is the Great Emperor of the Purple Tenuity of the Central Heaven (Zhongtian Ziwei Beiji Dadi 中天紫微北极大帝). He is the lord of the stars, personified by the Northern Polestar, the fixed center around which the entire sky revolves . He assists the Jade Emperor in governing the sun, the moon, and the planets, and he controls the climate and the four seasons.

The third is the Great Heavenly Emperor of the Curved Array (Gouchen Shanggong Tianhuang Dadi 勾陈上宫天皇大帝). He is the deity of the constellation Gouchen, which is close to the North Star . He assists the Jade Emperor by managing the celestial military, overseeing warfare, and regulating dynastic changes on Earth. He is the arbiter of conflict and the enforcer of cosmic order .

The fourth is the Empress of the Earth (Houtu Huang Diqi 后土皇地祇), the great goddess of the soil and land . She is the divine counterpart to the Jade Emperor’s heavenly yang, embody the earthly yin.

Together, the Four Guides form the core of the celestial government, transforming the abstract principles of the Three Pures into a structured and managed universe.
