The Three Pures | 三清

At the dawn of the universe, there was only the Tao, a formless and eternal potential. From this void, the “Energy of The One” (一炁) transformed into the three highest gods of the Taoist pantheon: the Three Pures (Sanqing 三清) . They are not creators in a physical sense, but rather the primordial emanations of the Tao itself, the source of all existence, the principles of order, and the ultimate reality from which all things emerge . Residing in the Three Pure Heavens, the highest realms above all others, they are often depicted as throned elders, robed in the fundamental colors from which all hues originate .

The first of the Three Pures is the Venerable Celestial of the Original Beginning (Yuanshi Tianzun 元始天尊), who rules the Heaven of Jade Purity . He is the Lord of the beginning, the master of the earliest phase of creation when the universe was first formed from chaos. He is often shown holding a pearl, symbolizing the infinite potential and the seed of creation . He is the “Treasure of the Tao” (Daobao 道寶).

The second is the Venerable Celestial of the Numinous Treasure (Lingbao Tianzun 灵宝天尊), who resides in the Heaven of High Purity . He is the custodian of the sacred scriptures and the divine law. It is he who separated the Yin from the Yang, brought order to the elements, and established the natural cycles of time, dividing it into distinct epochs . He holds a ruyi scepter, a symbol of authority, and is known as the “Treasure of the Law” (Jingbao 經寶).

The third is the Venerable Celestial of the Way and its Virtue (Daode Tianzun 道德天尊), who rules the Heaven of Supreme Purity . He is the embodiment of the Tao in its interaction with the world. It is he who brings civilization and imparts wisdom to humanity. His most famous manifestation on Earth was Laozi (Lao Tzu), the ancient sage who authored the Tao Te Ching, the foundational text of Taoist philosophy . He is often depicted as a kindly, white-bearded old man holding a fan, symbolizing the spreading of the Tao to all people. He is the “Treasure of the Master” (Shibao 師寶).

Thus, the Three Pures represent the complete cycle of existence: the primordial origin (Yuanshi), the divine order (Lingbao), and the manifestation in the world (Daode) . They are not three separate gods but three aspects of a single, ultimate divine reality.
