The Five Old Lords | 五老君

The Five Old Lords (Wulaojun 五老君), also known as the Five Emperors or the Primordial Five Elders, are ancient and powerful deities who personify the fundamental forces of the cosmos . They are considered among the earliest emanations of the Tao, “heavenly and natural gods” who existed before the creation of the world and are not beings who achieved divinity through cultivation . In the Taoist hierarchy, they are immensely revered, often positioned just below the Three Pures, and they represent the five directions (north, south, east, west, and center) and the five elements (water, fire, wood, metal, and earth) .

Each of the Five Old Lords is a cosmic sovereign with specific attributes and domains:

  1. The Old Lord of the Beginning of the Green Spirits (东方安宝华林青灵始老君) is the Green Emperor of the East. He rides a green dragon, represents the element of wood, and is associated with spring, renewal, and the balance of Yin and Yang .
  2. The Old Lord of the Red Spirits of the Bright Yang (南方梵宝昌阳丹灵真老君) is the Red Emperor of the South. He rides a red dragon, represents the element of fire, and is responsible for the flourishing and regeneration of all living beings .
  3. The Old Lord of the Origin of the Primary Spirits (中央玉宝元灵元老君) is the Yellow Emperor of the Center. He rides a yellow dragon, represents the element of earth, and governs the overall completeness, stability, and harmony of all things .
  4. The Old August Lord of the White Spirits (西方七宝金门皓灵皇老君) is the White Emperor of the West. He rides a white dragon, represents the element of metal, and presides over the ways of spirits, souls, and justice .
  5. The Old Dark Lord of the Five Spirits (北方洞阳朔单郁绝五灵玄老君) is the Black Emperor of the North. He rides a black dragon, represents the element of water, and controls the flow of vital energy (Qi) down to earth, ensuring harmony and balance in the world .

Their influence permeates all levels of existence. In the heavens, they are the Five Emperors among the stars; on earth, they rule over the five sacred mountains (Wuyue); and within the human body, they manifest as the gods of the five vital organs (wuzang) . They are the very essence of the Five Qi, the foundational energies that shape and sustain the universe.
